What trip coverage usually handles

Trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical care abroad, medical evacuation, baggage loss and delay. Your health plan often covers little or nothing outside the country, and a credit card's built-in protection is usually narrower than people assume — worth reading before you rely on it.

When to buy it

Soon after the first trip payment. Several benefits, including pre-existing condition waivers and cancel-for-any-reason upgrades, are only available within a short window after that first deposit. Waiting until closer to departure quietly removes options.
