Tips for Preventing Workplace Injuries

Injured construction workerInjuries in the workplace—both minor and major—can occur within any industry, which may lead to an employee taking time off for treatment and recovery. Creating a safe work environment should be an important piece of your business plan. Employees are better able to work efficiently when they feel safe and secure. Not to mention, the fewer injuries that occur on premises, the less you’re likely to pay for workers compensation insurance. We’ve provided a few tips to help prevent injury at your place of business.

Trips

Trips and slips cause the greatest number of workplace injuries, many of which can be prevented with simple housekeeping. Keep walkways free of clutter and debris. Take care to coil computer and phone cords neatly against the wall. Frayed carpeting or loose flooring/stairs should be repaired immediately. Ensure that the workspace is lit well so employees don’t fumble around in dimly lit spaces.

Slips

Slips can be just as dangerous as trips, so it’s essential to clean up spills as quickly as possible. And until a spill is cleaned, make sure it’s clearly marked so people know to avoid the area. Additionally, be sure to remove ice from outdoor walkways during winter.

Fire Safety

Your employees should be trained on evacuation and communication procedures in the event of a fire. Holding a fire drill every six months can help refresh this knowledge and ensure employees are prepared. During these drills, you may also go over training on the use of fire extinguishers in the event that a small, containable fire ignites.

Other

Be sure employees are aware of general safety rules, such as no running or horseplay. Develop training programs to teach new employees how to safely operate any non-standard equipment or machinery. Provide protective clothing and gear as needed. Keep a first aid kit handy and train employees on basic medical care that may become necessary due to the nature of the work. Designate an outdoor area that’s safe for smokers and display clear signage.

Even safe workplaces can become the source of injury. Call us at (417) 862-7700 for more information on workers compensation insurance with your insurance providers Springfield MO.
