Maintaining Your Boat Trailer

people on boatMany boat owners go to great lengths to keep their vessel looking spectacular. But boat trailers don’t often get the same attention. Ignoring the maintenance of your boat trailer would be a misstep because any failures on the road could lead to expensive damage to your boat. Here are a few things to check regularly so you can keep your boat trailer in great shape, just like your boat.

Inspect your trailer tires before each big trip, including the air pressure, tread wear and loose lug nuts. If you notice uneven tire wear or suspect another problem, have it inspected by a mechanic before heading out to the lake.

Elevate your trailer wheels one at a time to inspect the wheel bearings. Spin each wheel and listen for a growling or rubbing noise, which could signify worn bearings, lack of grease or heavy rust. While the wheels are up, try to move each one side to side to ensure the bearings are tight. Many industry professionals recommend carrying an extra set of bearings, especially if you travel long distances with your boat on your trailer.

Check the brakes for proper functioning. Additionally, check your state’s laws in regards to trailers. Some states require boat trailers to have brakes on all wheels, while other requirements pertain to brakes on axles.

Ensure the winch straps and cables are in good shape. For good measure, attach an extra safety chain from the bow eye to the trailer. To prevent your boat from bouncing on the trailer, use strong hold-down straps on the stern as well.

Test the trailer lights and replace bulbs as necessary to stay in compliance with road safety laws.

A little bit of extra safety can go a long way toward protecting your finances and preventing mishaps. Plus, with everything in check, it’s easier to kick back and enjoy the open water with peace of mind.

Protect your boat and trailer year-round. Call Insurance Providers at (417) 206-3733 for more information on Joplin boat insurance.
